Kenya’s Harambee Stars secured a narrow 1-0 victory over DR Congo in their CHAN 2025 Group C encounter at Moi International Sports Centre. The win, while significant for Kenya’s progression, unfolded in an atmosphere markedly different from typical high-stakes continental fixtures.
Contrary to expectations of a packed and raucous venue, large sections of the stadium remained empty. The anticipated electric atmosphere was largely absent. Reports indicated a significant portion of the attending crowd were sponsored by politicians, leading to pockets of noise rather than sustained, organic fan support. Genuine fan enthusiasm appeared diluted.
On the pitch, the match was a tightly contested affair. DR Congo controlled possession for stretches but struggled to create clear-cut chances against a disciplined Kenyan defense. Kenya, while showing resilience, also found opportunities limited for much of the game.
The decisive moment arrived midway through the second half. A Kenyan corner kick was not adequately cleared by the Congolese defense.

Both sides had further half-chances. DR Congo pressed for an equalizer late on, forcing Kenyan goalkeeper into a couple of routine saves. Kenya also had opportunities to extend their lead on the counter-attack, but the final touch or pass often lacked precision.
Despite the subdued environment and questions surrounding the crowd, the result stands. Kenya executed their game plan effectively, defended stoutly, and capitalized on one of their few genuine scoring opportunities.
