Pyramids Stun Pirates 3-2 to Reach Maiden CAF Champions League Final

In a pulsating CAF Champions League semifinal clash at Cairo’s 30 June Stadium, Pyramids FC overturned two deficits to defeat Orlando Pirates 3-2, securing their first-ever appearance in the competition’s final.

The Egyptian side’s resilience shone through as Fiston Mayele’s brace and a crucial header from Ramadan Sobhi sealed a dramatic victory, ending Pirates’ continental dreams.

The Buccaneers struck first in the 41st minute when 20-year-old Relebohile Mofokeng volleyed home a flicked header from Tapelo Xoki off a long throw, showcasing composure beyond his years.

Pyramids responded swiftly, with Mayele pouncing on Mostafa Fathi’s cross just before halftime to level the score.

Orlando Pirates regained the lead early in the second half through Mohau Nkota, who curled a stunning long-range effort into the bottom corner in the 53rd minute.

Yet Pyramids’ fighting spirit surged again: substitute Ramadan Sobhi, introduced moments earlier, soared to head home a cross in the 58th minute, capitalizing on defensive frailty.

The decider came in the 85th minute when Mayele reacted fastest to a saved header from Sodiq Ougola, smashing the rebound into the net to complete his double and spark wild celebrations.

For Pyramids, this victory marks a historic milestone. Founded in 2008 and rebranded in 2018, the club has rapidly ascended to African prominence, now set to face Mamelodi Sundowns in a final that underscores Egypt’s enduring dominance in continental football.

Orlando Pirates, meanwhile, are left to rue defensive lapses after twice surrendering leads. Their exit dashes hopes of an all-South African final, a scenario last seen in 2013 when they fell to Al Ahly in Cairo.

Despite a valiant effort, coach José Riveiro’s tactical adjustments, including a defensive 5-4-1 setup, couldn’t withstand Pyramids’ relentless pressure.

This semifinal epitomized the drama of knockout football, with Pyramids’ tenacity and Mayele’s clinical finishing proving decisive. As they prepare for a showdown with Sundowns, the Egyptian outfit aims to cement their legacy, while Pirates must regroup, their Champions League ambitions postponed for another year.
