The 2022 FIFA World cup hosts Qatar has started the global showpiece in an awful fashion, losing 2-0 to Ecuador, to becoming the first host nation to ever lose an opening match in the history of the competition. Enner Valencia scored both of Ecuador’s goals and even had one goal disallowed in the first half of the game.
Valencia found the back of the net after Qatar’s goalkeeper Saad Alsheeb made a mess of his clearance but, the goal was ruled out after a lengthy VAR check as they felt Michael Estrada’s right leg made him offside.
Valencia was awarded a penalty in the 16th minute of the game after Qatar’s goalkeeper Saad Al Alsheeb took him out in the box. The 33-year-old slotted it into the bottom right corner to hand his side the opener.
Ecuardos captain Valencia powered in another header in the 31st minute of the World Cup game to put Ecuador in the driers sit.
Disappointed with the performance the hosts supporters left the stands leaving the ground around half empty for much of the second period.
The one-month long competition continues on Monday with three matches to look out for.
African champions Senegal has a date with Netherlands in the other group A match. The lions of Teranga will be getting in to the pitch without the services of their best forward Sadio Mane who has been ruled out of the competition with an injury.
Aliou Cisse’ however has options upfront who are equally able to handle the task ahead. The team boosts of quality players such as Chelsea duo of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
In group B England will take on Iran while the USA will take to the pitch against Wales.
